The Catcher and the Rye

In English class, we have begun reading the book The Catcher and the Rye. In the begining it was not so good, however, it starts getting better. The story, is of this 16 yeard old kid, Holden Caufield, which is expelled for bout the third time from a boarding school. He gets the news before his parents, and before he recieves the word to get out. So he thinks it is better if he just goes away. It would not make a difference anyhow. So on a Saturday night, after getting into a fight, he decides to make a run for it. He packs his bag and goes. In New York, he decides to get a cheap motel, where he plans to spend the last four or five days before his parents have had the notice of his expulsion, when he can go back to his household with his overnerved mother, and father. Holden is a very depresses boy, and sometimes one might think overdepressed. However, as the book progresses, it is clear why he is like that, for example his dead brother, and as mentioned before lunatic parents. The only people who he has a healthy relashionship, are with his siblings(brother and sister) although he considers his brother more of a cool dude that was ruined by by Hollywood (he is an author). At the present moment, he is at the hotel, and has just faked dying, after only taking a beating from the hotel"s janitor (he has very awkward actions). I think this book is going to be good, and it got really better since I began, so much that I've already read five chapters ahead ( I hope Mrs.Feitosa dosn't care...).

Jaunts to the beach

My father decided to go to the beach on thursay and come back on saturday, however, it rained so we went on friday. We went to a beach called Juquehy in the north coast of São Paulo. I was kind of tired, didn't have that CRAVING to go to the beach, however, I went. I woke up, made my bag, two shorts, and three T-shirts, thjree underwear, my keel, leash, wax(for the board), and my good and old havaianas. I put yellow in her case, and strapped her to the rack of the car. So we went. Didn't get any traffic, for we were going against most of the people, who were coming back from carnival. We got tjere at about mid day, left our bags at our rooms, my pop made some sandwiches while I ajusted the leash and the keel to my board( I was still kind of sleepy). I ate a sandwich, and we walked down to the beach. The moment I saw the surfing conditions, that whole loving surfing/beach sensation came back. I was awaken. I wakes my board, and went in. The sea was big, whith waves of about 1.5 meters with bigger waves when the series came in. Yellow nd I tried to pass the breaking waves, and foam, which was really hard, and we were pushed back nearly the whole way top the beach at one point. However, eventually we made it. There were about four or five people surfing, and I was there. While the waves came, I would only feel the fear of paddling into one, but not do anything. about half an hour later I went into one. the wave closed on top of me, and I was thrown into the bottom. When I came up again, I jumped on the board and paddled back. Now that I had already felt it, it was easier. Suddenly, a wave opening right next to me, a big one, came. Even though it opened to the left, I went in. At the rate I would speed down the wave, the wave would grow behind me. I heard the noise of the wave breaking right at my side, and I was still surfing. I surfed it, and close to the end, it got me. It was FANTASTIC! On the next day, waves were much smaller, and we took the camera to rake some pics. It was also really cool, though it didn't feel nearly as close as it felt while facing the big waves, and the adrenaline was much smaller. I surfed until my leash broke, and by that ime, it was close to the end of the day, so I took yellow back, gave her a "non salt water bath", and took her keel of, and put her into the sack. We hit the rode at 6, and got to São Paulo at eight. It was a perfect jaunt. I intend to do this again many times, for even though it is for a short period of time, it is something different, and really nice.
P.S: The fotos I put here are the first ones I am in, they are mine, and they were taken in the second day, when waves were much smaller than the first day.

Scuba Diving

I've been looking through my blog, and it made me laugh that there exists a pattern of posts, which I disn't think would happened. My last posts have been all about the beach, or better, about summer. It is funny how the enviorment affects our thinking as well. Anyhow, as it is still summer, I will talk abou one of the things I most enjoy: scuba diving. My father has always liked scuba diving too, which may have been one of the reasons I like it soo much, however, I enjoy scuba diving so much also because as I said in the last post, I love the sea, and compared to other natural enviroments we have in our planet, the sea is one of the most unexplored.

The first time I went diving, was in a beach called Toque Toque Pequeno, aobut three ours from São Paulo. It was really cool, and we saw many different things, like a turtle and a snake. Then , after diving going there about three times, we went to Natal, in the North part of Brazil, and dived in a place called Maracajaú, which in my opinion, is the best place to scuba. It was the first time I dived with the oxygen tank, and it was a hell of an experience. We saw many cool fishes, and animals.

After that, I went to Fernando de Noronha, which is also an extremeley good place to dive, and I dived at about 12 meters under the ocean's surface. In this majestic arquipelago, I saw barracudas, turtles, and even a small octopus. This year, as I mentioned in the last post, I went again to the North Coast, and again to Maracajaú. Even though it was again, very cool, I got sad to see how the turism has affected the scuba diving in a bad manner. The previous time before this last one, when I went there, we would get a boat, which would drive us about fourteen Km away from the coast, and there would be one platform, so that we could have a place to rest. This time, there are many boats, including a gigantic one, which takes us to the same place, and where there are about 7 platforms. After diving, I began talking to a local guide, and I asked him, why had all those beautful fauna and flora dissapeared. He told me that it is because there are too many people there with sunblock, and too many boats, which scare them away. It is natural that people be attracted to beautiful places like that, however, what made me sad was that of those many people that go there, a small ammount of people are there for the real purpose of diving. Most are there to jump in the water, go back to the bboat, and keep drinking beer. I mean, give me a break. If one wants to enjoy themseleves like that, be my guest, but do It some place where it will not affect the enjoyment of other people, like me, whoms purpose is to SCUBA!!!

Anyhow, I recomend the sport to anyone who really likes the sea, and natural habitats. When I scuba, it seems I have been transported to another world, as it is so quiet, (when no boats are zooming over the sea... )

The Beach.

I really enjoy the beach. I mean, who dosn't? Everything in a beach, which is natural or like Marty from Madagascar would say,"from the wild" is simply perfect.
First of all, there is the sand. Sand, such a boring name for such a beautiful thing. People often go to the beach, and touch the sand and all, but really don't pay attention to what they are holding. They are holding grains billions of years old, which was washed by the sea to the shore. Each one of those grains has a meaningfull history. They "saw" everything happened! To add to that, it is very good to get a hand of sand, and just fell it.

Sencond, there is the scenario of the beach. This, is also one of the greatest and most influencial parts of the beach. Recenteley, I went on vacation to the northern part of Brazil. It was just massiveley beautiful. There, I was able to look at beaches that were deserted, with not an alive soul through the beach, and these were kilometers long... TO add to the white sand, and nobody on the beach, gigantic palm trees would sway with a loud swishing sound, caused by the very hard wind. This place, was São Miguel do Gostoso. It is a small town, which has numerous beautifull beaches. This part of the coast is already far north, which means the coast is not paralell to the african continent anymore. It's face is mostly directed to places like the Caribean Islands. The people in São Miguel do Gostoso are very polite, and helpfull, unlike mostly unknown people in places like São Paulo. In that area, it is rare for one to go to a beach, and not find at least one fisherman's boat, or "jangada". A little down south, one will find beaches which are located down of these MASSIVE cliffs. Another beautiful scenario. It really depends which taste the person has for beaches. It could be a deserted beach with boats, and no people, while it could also be a beach full of people, and loud music being played (which I dread).

Finally, the last thing that makes beaches what they are, and to me is one of the most important parts of a beach, is the sea. To me, the sea is magical. It is together with the sand, the history of our planet. Imagine how many boats already passed throgh the sea, or how many sea creatures live in the bottom of the ocean, which we have no idea! One of the main motives of why I enjoy the sea so much, is because it is so unexplored. The sea gives us also many cool things to do like surfing, sailing, scuba diving, kayaking, and even food. Like I mentioned before, the sea is magical.
These are three of the main things which make the beach perfect. There are many things to add to that, and I am sure that anyone can think of at least one. Even Mr. Bean likes the beach! It is his source of inspiration in his last movie, when he goes on vacation. It is very rare to find someone who hasn't at least had one good enjoyable time at the beach.
